Matehya Bryant Picks Up Big West Weekly Honor

RIVERSIDE, Calif. โ€“ Matehya Bryant was named the Big West Player of the Week on Monday, it was announced by the conference office. This is Bryant’s first weekly honor in her second season in the Inland Empire and the program’s first since Keilanei Cooper on January 18, 2021.

Bryant, who currently leads the Big West in conference play with 11.8 rebounds per game, averaged 16.0 points and 10.5 rebounds last week in a 1-1 split with Cal State Fullerton and CSUN – all while shooting above 50 percent in each contest. She remains the only Big West player to average north of 10 rebounds in conference action this season.ย

The redshirt junior registered her third double double of the season on Thursday at Titan Gym with 14 points and 14 rebounds before going 7 for 10 from the floor in helping the Highlanders knock off first-place and previously unbeaten CSUN in Northridge.ย

Bryant came three rebounds shy of a second straight double double on Saturday, but scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half in the Highlanders’ third win of the season and fifth in their last six against CSUN. Bryant’s final bucket was the icing on the cake, a game-winning hook shot off her right hand with 15 seconds left in regulation.ย

UCR returns to the SRC Arena this week for another pair of Big West games after a week on the road. The Highlanders will host UC San Diego on Wednesday, January 11 at 6:00 p.m. before UC Santa Barbara comes to town on Saturday, January 14 at 6:00 p.m. Both contests will be streamed live on ESPN+ and tickets are available now at highlanderstickets.universitytickets.com.
