Pete Nance commits to the UNC Basketball program

The UNC basketball roster for the 2022-2023 season is officially set, as the Tar Heels earned a commitment from one of the top transfers available.

After making his official visit to Chapel Hill on Thursday, Northwestern transfer Pete Nance saw all he needed to decide that North Carolina was the best destination for him.

On social media, Nance announced that he has committed to the UNC basketball program. With a season of college eligibility remaining, Nance will fill the Tar Heels’ final roster spot that was left open with the transfer of Kerwin Walton.

This is a major addition for Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels, as they’ll bring in an impact player with a ton of collegiate experience. Nance is coming off a career year in which he averaged 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting a staggering 45.2% from three-point land.

Nance, a 6-foot-10 forward, possesses a skill set that should help him thrive in the Tar Heels’ up-tempo style of play.

For starters, he has improved each season he’s played at Northwestern, and his game should continue to develop, especially after receiving some valuable feedback as part of the recent NBA Draft Combine. Additionally, he’s been rated as a very efficient offensive player, as he’s simply been effective with the basketball in his hands.

Although he’s played mostly as a “5” for Northwestern, most of his minutes will likely come as a “stretch-four” for the Tar Heels. This is a role that could fit him well, as he’s comfortable in pick and roll situations and has knocked down his three-point attempts (especially from the top of the key) at a rather insane clip.

Defensively, he’s a guy who is very capable of protecting the rim. Even though he doesn’t have the length of some other players at his position, he’s still a very good shot-blocker and is often regarded as a good defensive player.

If Tar Heels fans weren’t excited enough about the upcoming season, the news about Nance joining the UNC basketball program will certainly add to that. The hope is that Nance could use his final season of eligibility to help his new team complete their redemption mission, as they vie for another national championship banner in Chapel Hill.
