2024 Garding Against Cancer Signature Event raises $850,000

MADISON, Wis. — Garding Against Cancer held its signature event at the Kohl Center last week, as the organization founded by Wisconsin men’s basketball head coach Greg Gard and his wife Michelle raised $850,000 for cancer research in the state of Wisconsin.

True to the theme of this year’s signature event, “The Future is Bright,” Garding Against Cancer has now raised over $8.5 million as of May 2024.

Garding Against Cancer was founded in 2016 by Gard and his wife Michelle.

In attendance as featured guest at this year’s event was college basketball analyst and famed color commentator Bill Raftery. Featured guests at past GAC events have included Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, comedian Charlie Berens, among others.

The fight against cancer is a mission that is personal to the Gard family. Gard’s father, Glen, was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer in May of 2015. He was treated, but passed away in October of 2015. Gard’s mother, Connie, has been fighting breast cancer.

Cancer has also affected the Wisconsin basketball family. This past season, Walt McGrory, a former UW basketball athlete who played for Gard, passed away from cancer in December of 2023 at the age of 24.
