College basketball transfer portal 2024: Ranking top 75 players as Tyrese Hunter commits to Memphis

Memphis landed another big transfer commitment Monday when former Texas guard Tyrese Hunter announced that he will join the Tigers for the 2024-25 season. Hunter ranks as the No. 44 player in the CBS Sports Transfer Rankings and is the fourth transfer commitment of the cycle for coach Penny Hardaway, who is conducting another roster overhaul as he enters his seventh season on the job.

After averaging double figures in the Big 12 for three seasons — one at Iowa State and two at Texas — Hunter should be an impact player for Memphis as the Tigers look to assert themselves in a revamped AAC that should be ripe for the taking. Also committed to Memphis are No. 26 transfer PJ Haggerty, former Illinois big man Dain Dainja and ex-Wichita State sharpshooter Colby Rogers.

Hardaway will be tasked with devising a plan that maximizes playing Hunter and Haggerty together as both are strong on-ball guards with mediocre 3-point shooting track records. Most of Memphis’ key players from a 22-10 campaign are departing, although leading scorer David Jones could opt for a return to college after exploring the NBA Draft process. While the Tigers have several more scholarships to fill, they are off to a strong start as Hardaway seeks to lead his former school back to the Big Dance following NCAA Tournament appearances in 2022 and 2023.

With the spring portal window closing on May 1, those wishing to transfer are running short on time to declare their intentions. But so long as players have entered the portal by that date, they face no firm deadline on when they must commit to their new school. Those who are exploring the NBA Draft process have through May 29 to withdraw if they want to return to college next season.

When players hit the portal, the best will be ranked here.
