WNBA: Ohio State’s Jacy Sheldon brings defensive-mindset to Wings

In what many are considering one of the deepest drafts in WNBA history, the Dallas Wings had a golden opportunity to improve on last season’s top-four finish with the No. 5 overall pick.

After no-brainers like Caitlin Clark and Cameron Brink were taken off the board, the Wings were finally on the clock and ready to make their selection. Dallas had plenty of solid options and decided to draft Jacy Sheldon of Ohio State.

The selection was a surprise but not a shock, as Dallas lacks a guard with a defensive focus, and Sheldon theoretically can help the team in that aspect. She gives Dallas a 3-and-D guard who can solidify the backcourt when paired with Arike Ogunbowale. Sheldon had a strong finish at Ohio State; she averaged 15.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists for her career. In her fifth and final season, she posted 17.8 points, 3.2 boards and 3.8 assists per game. Defensively, she was a master swiper, averaging 1.9 steals per game for her career.

It’s always hard to judge a selection on draft night, as we don’t fully know what the player will become and how their game will translate to the pros. But given the situation and players available, the Wings seem to have been winners on draft night. Despite the good vibes and positivity, Sheldon understands the challenges ahead in her rookie season, not just for herself but also for her rookie class. In her media availability after the draft, Sheldon said:

There’s going to be an adjustment period for all of us. Whether people want to admit it or not. I’m looking forward to it I’m welcoming it. I think as a rookie, that’s something you have to accept and be ready for.

With training camp beginning on April 28, Sheldon will have to continue her quick turnaround from her collegiate career to her professional one. The WNBA season will be here before we know it, with action beginning on May 14.

In the meantime, Dallas has to feel good about its addition as it moves one step closer to catching up to the super teams in Las Vegas and New York.
