With re-load underway, UConn men honored at State Capital, vowing a three-peat

HARTFORD — The state House of Representatives was in  the middle of a heated, three-prong debate. Should the lollipop be Connecticut’s official state candy, or locally manufactured Pez? Should the praying mantis be the state insect? Should the Siberian husky be the state dog?

Finally, Rep. Doug Dubitsky rose to call out colleagues on the absurdity he was hearing, but he was gaveled down midsentence. The champs had arrived.

Husky Day is known around the state Capitol as a day not much gets done, a day to talk, apparently, about frivolous legislation. The UConn men’s basketball team, repeat national champions, brought politics to standstill.

However, the program’s reloading for a run at a third straight title was in full swing. Earlier in the day, Tarris Reed, a productive forward leaving Michigan, committed to join the Huskies. Reed took his official visit on the day of the parade in Hartford, last Saturday. The Huskies, sources confirmed, also lined up an official visit for early next week with 6-foot-7 small forward/shooter Liam McNeely, at Monteverde Academy. who is considered a five-star recruit. Coaches can’t comment on specific players in recruiting.

“We’re on construction,” coach Dan Hurley said. “The architecture, trying to put together all the right pieces, put together another great team. We’re not looking to put together an all-star team, we’re looking to retain as many players as we can, that it would make sense for, to carry over a lot of our culture. We’ll be strategic and smart. We won’t add a lot, because we feel like we’ve got a lot coming back even though we’re probably going to lose more.”

Donovan Clingan has announced his intention to go to the NBA Draft. Stephon Castle is expected to follow soon. Cam Spencer and Tristen Newton are out of eligibility. Alex Karaban is expected to test the draft waters; as a sophomore, it might make sense in terms of draft stock for him to come back.

Hurley said it’s possible some players will transfer out of the program.

“There’s always that potential, there are players where our role for them won’t line up with what they see for themselves,” Hurley said. “We’ve got such a great organization, the last thing we want to do is…
