Florida basketball rises in CBS Sports rankings after NCAA tournament

What Todd Golden had to say following Florida's SEC title loss

The college basketball season is well in the rearview now after the UConn Huskies claimed their second-straight NCAA Tournament title earlier this month. But it is never too early to start thinking about where the teams stand ahead of next fall’s campaign.

CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish published his updated college basketball rankings — which include his top 25 plus one — and somewhat surprisingly, the Florida Gators were among the biggest movers on the board. Todd Golden’s team moved up two spots to No. 22 despite an opening-round exit in the Big Dance.

“This ranking is based on Todd Golden’s Gators returning six of the top nine scorers — everybody besides Zyon Pullin, Tyrese Samuel and Riley Kugel — from a team that secured a No. 7 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament,” Parrish said. “The addition of Sam Alexis gives Florida a 6-9 forward who averaged 10.8 points and 9.1 rebounds at Chattanooga as a sophomore.”

The recent acquisition of Alexis looks to be a good move for Golden and the returning cast does give one a lot of confidence in next season’s roster. However, Parrish failed to consider the loss of Micah Handlogten, who will very likely be sitting the next season after his gruesome injury; the newcomer will likely fill his role in the frontcourt rotation.
