After .500 season, Rockets turn focus to future

In what turned out to be historically deep Western Conference, the Houston Rockets (41-41) fell short of their ultimate goal, which was to earn a spot in the NBA’s 2024 postseason.

Yet, it’s hard to look at the 2023-24 season as anything but a success. With Houston’s rebuild shifting to phase two, Ime Udoka’s new-look Rockets (41-41) finished at .500 and became just the 10th team in NBA history — and just the fifth in the last 30 years — to immediatelly follow a 60-loss season with a non-losing campaign.

That type of collective growth brings lots of optimism for 2024-25, especially with Alperen Sengun and Tari Eason expected to return healthy after missing considerable time this season with injuries. Those two and other key players within Houston’s young core — including Jalen Green, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., and Cam Whitmore — are all at a point in their careers where they could improve significantly over the upcoming offseason, as well.

With an eye toward the future, here’s how Udoka and several players contextualized the season that was via April 14 interviews from Los Angeles (following a season-ending victory over the Clippers).
