Dylan Cardwell: A year in review

Top players from Auburn’s win over Missouri

Auburn basketball’s 2023-24 season concluded in the round of 64 with a loss to Yale, 78-76 in Spokane, Washington. It is now time to reflect on the season that was by reviewing the performances of Auburn’s key players.

This series continues with senior center, No. 44 Dylan Cardwell. The fourth-year Tiger played in a career-high 35 games in 2023-2024 despite only starting one. Auburn’s front-court spark plug brought constant energy across the 14.7 minutes per game he averaged this season. Along with his energy, Cardwell was able to set career marks in plenty of statistical categories including points, blocks, and assists per game.

Here is a look at the final stats from what was likely Dylan Cardwell’s final season as an Auburn Tiger.

After failing to surpass more than 4 points per game over his first three seasons on the Plains, Dylan Cardwell produced his best scoring season as a Tiger in 2023-2024, scoring just over 5 points per contest. The senior never scored more than a dozen in a game this season, but he managed 12 points in 3 different games and scored in double-figures on 5 different occasions. Most impressively, Cardwell was only held scoreless in 4 contests after struggling to accumulate points for most of his career.

While the senior didn’t have a fantastic season rebounding the basketball, he did manage to have the second-highest average of his career this season. Cardwell’s 3.7 boards per game in 2023-2024 was just above his career average of 3.5 rebounds per contest. The Augusta, GA native never reached double digits on the glass, but he did grab a season-high 9 rebounds on December 30 against Chattanooga. Cardwell’s SEC-high rebound total came a few days later against Arkansas, when he secured 8 rebounds on January 6.

It’s rare to see a big man post career-high marks in both points and assists per game in a single season, but that’s exactly what Dylan Cardwell did in 2023-2024. The senior drastically improved as a passer over his upper-class seasons on the Plains, going from 0.5 dimes per fixture in his freshmen and sophomore seasons to 1.1 and 1.2 in his junior and senior campaigns, respectively. Cardwell managed to rack up 5 dimes twice in his senior season, once against Georgia and once against South Carolina in conference play.
