In the final seconds of Houston’s thrilling win at Sacramento on Sunday, rising star Alperen Sengun appeared to suffer a serious leg injury and left the court in a wheelchair.
Sengun’s right leg bent awkwardly after a transition sequence in which he attempted to deny a shot attempt near the rim.
The Turkish sensation initially grabbed his right knee, though on-court microphones captured Sengun yelling about pain in his ankle.
To say the least, it’s a devastating turn of events for the Rockets and their third-year big man, who drew serious All-Star consideration earlier this season. The 21-year-old leads Houston in scoring (21.2 points per game) and rebounding (9.4), and he’s played a key role in their impressive 4-1 record to begin March.
In postgame comments, head coach Ime Udoka said it was too soon to know specifics regarding the injury or Sengun’s potential recovery timetable. For now, here’s a look at how the injury happened, as well as immediate reaction and speculation.
Not sure which mic was grabbing the sound, but you could hear Alperen Sengun say on the broadcast “my ankle is f*cked up bro.”

Wheelchair being brought out for Sengun now. Head trainer Jason Biles and other staff members assisting. Covering his face as he’s wheeled off the floor. Hoping for the best.

Cheers for Åengün as he is put in the wheelchair and again as he is wheeled off, his hands over his eyes.
