Razorbacks crash and burn against Vanderbilt

The good cheer the Arkansas basketball team had created over the last two weeks dissipated Tuesday inside Bud Walton Arena.

Vanderbilt, it of two SEC wins entering the game, were not exactly scared of the Basketball Palace of Mid-America, knocking off the Razorbacks, 85-82. Arkansasโ€™ two-game winning streak, which was the teamโ€™s longest since December came to an end.

As it has most of the season, offense failed the Hogs, despite the final tally. Vandy went on a 7-0 run just ahead of the penultimate media timeout to turn a four-point lead into an 11-point edge. Arkansas had three turnovers since the previous media timeout and hadnโ€™t scored since then, either.

Arkansas went on a run late, making seven straight shots from the floor and trimming Vanderbiltโ€™s lead to three, 78-75, with 2:04 left before Tramon Markโ€™s potential game-tying 3-pointer went awry at the buzzer.

The Razorbacks shot just 41% from the floor as Vanderbilt countered on the interior, scoring 44 points in the paint en route to a shooting 51%.

Three Vandy players scored in double figures, led by Ven-Allen Lubin who registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Khalif Battle led the Hogs with 36 points.

Arkansasโ€™ loss ensures a losing SEC season with three regular-season games left to play. The next one comes Saturday at Kentucky.
