UNC can’t overcome the Hokies strong start, losing 74-62 on the road

Deja Kelly reaches program points milestone

The UNC women’s basketball program couldn’t overcome Virginia Tech’s fast start, losing 74-62.

The Tar Heels got off to a slow start, with the Hokies getting off to a 21-5 start in the first quarter. UNC found their spark in the second quarter, winning that period 22-12, to go into the half down 33-27.

Despite battling in the third and fourth, the Hokies’ attack was too much for the Tar Heels, failing to keep up with their offensive efficiency. Virginia Tech shot 52.9%(27/51) from the field, meanwhile, UNC shot 39%(23/59).

One glaring issue came from the rebounding deficit, with the Hokies winning the rebound battle 36 to 27. The other came from ball movement with Virginia Tech finishing with 16 assists to UNC’s 9.

It wasn’t the night that UNC hoped for after a big win over No. 6 NC State, showcasing that UNC still has a ways to go. Despite the tough loss, it was a great night for Tar Heel guard Deja Kelly, who finished with a season-high 29 points.

UNC will be back in action on Thursday with an ACC matchup against Boston College.
