Foul trouble, JuJu Watkins doom CU Buffs women’s basketball at USC

College women’s basketball superstar JuJu Watkins and a quick whistle from the refs ultimately doomed No. 11 Colorado’s upset bid at No. 7 USC on Friday night.

The Buffs led Southern Cal by two scores midway through the third quarter before the freshman Watkins took over, scoring 14 of her game-high 42 points in the fourth quarter. Following the 87-81 defeat, Colorado (20-6, 10-5 Pac-12) has now lost three straight for the first time all season.

Once Jaylyn Sherrod fouled out at the 8:15 mark of the fourth quarter and Aaronette Vonleh followed three minutes later, the Buffs’ offense was unable to keep pace with USC’s firepower.

Especially in the early going, Friday’s battle at the Galen Center featured an impressive shooting display by both teams. Colorado went 16-for-22 from the field, including 5-for-6 from deep, in the first half. Those numbers helped keep the Buffs alive against a Trojans team that made 10 first-half 3s.

Head coach JR Payne’s Buffs will be at No. 12 UCLA on Monday (ESPN2).
