Michigan State Falls to Iowa at Home


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State fell behind by 12 points at halftime and could not recover as the Spartans lost to Iowa, 78-71, on Tuesday night at the Breslin Center.

Graduate forward Malik Hall had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while adding five assists, to lead three players in double figures.

Graduate guard Tyson Walker scored 16 points and had four assists and senior guard A.J. Hoggard added 15 points and four assists.

Records

Michigan State had a three-game win streak end and falls to 17-10 overall and 9-7 in the Big Ten Conference, while Iowa improves to 16-11 overall and 8-8 in league play.

  • Michigan State trailed by 12 points, 45-33, at the break and Iowa extended its lead to 16 points, 49-33, with baskets on the first two possessions, the second a layup from Owen Freeman.
  • The Spartans went into the half trailing by 12 points, 45-33, after Iowa shot 57.1 percent from the floor (16-of-28) and 44.4 percent from 3-point land (4-of-9).
  • MSU hit a trio of 3-pointers in the opening five minutes, with two from Walker tying the game at 11-all at the 15:01 mark.
  • After Iowa took a 24-21 the Spartans used a 6-0 burst to take a 27-24 lead on a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Tre Holloman with 6:34 left.
  • The Hawkeyes responded with a 15-4 run over 3:15 and took a 39-28 lead on free throws from Ben Krikke with 3:11 to play in the half.
  • The Spartans went more than four minutes without a field goal (4:13) before a jumper from Hall at the 2:21 mark but it 39-30, but Iowa hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute for the 45-33 lead.
