Kitley's 31 points pace Hokies in 76-52 win over Miami


BLACKSBURG, VA —Elizabeth Kitley scored 31 points to help lead the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team past the Miami Hurricanes 76-52 at home Thursday.

Kitley added 11 rebounds to her 31 point game to lead the Hokies (13-2, 4-0). Georgia Amoore helped out with 16 points, six assists and two steals and Matilda Ekh chipped in with 12 points.

The Virginia Tech offense was strong from deep, knocking down nine threes on 26 attempts. Ekh hit four treys for the Hokies in the contest.

Virginia Tech forced 17 Miami turnovers while committing 12 themselves in Thursday’s game. The Hokies turned those takeaways into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Amoore’s two steals led the way for Virginia Tech.

Kitley scored 23 points in the first half alone, the most points that a Virginia Tech player has scored in a single half in an ACC game in program history.

 


How It Happened

Virginia Tech entered the second quarter tied at 14-14 after a tightly contested first period. Virginia Tech capitalized on six Miami turnovers in the period, turning them into five points on the other end of the floor.

The game stayed tied until Virginia Tech went on a 15-0 run, highlighted by a three from Ekh, to take a 35-20 lead. The Hokies proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 40-24 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech scored five of its 26 total points in the period on second chance opportunities created by pulling down four offensive rebounds.

Virginia Tech wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Ekh, to expand its lead further to 46-24 with 9:27 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Hurricanes had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 57-39 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.

Virginia Tech started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 64-39 with 8:48 to go in the contest. The Hurricanes narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 76-52 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
