Women’s Basketball Wins Tenth Game of the Season at UPR-Mayaguez


MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico – McKendree University women’s basketball secured a hefty 82-52 win over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Friday evening to extend its win streak to nine and push its win total to 10 for the 2023-24 season.
 
From the start, the Bearcats put the pedal down and did not let up for the 40-minute contest. McKendree put up 47 points in the first half, 28 of those coming in the second quarter with a 71 percent field goal percentage and 62 percent three-point percentage; the Janes were held to just 20 points in the half. The second half was no different as McKendree held on to the lead to end with a score of 85-52.
 
McKendree had its best three-point shooting game of the season, netting 10-of-21 shots from beyond the arc for 47.6 percent. Senior guard Christy Fortune sank half of the Bearcats’ threes, going 5-for-8 from deep. Fortune ended the game with 15 total points.
 
Leading all scores for the contest was junior guard Clare Breden with 17 points. Senior forward Kristyn Mitchell added 14 to round out McKendree’s double-digit scoring. Mitchell was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field while Breden netted 6-of-8 field goals, 2-of-4 threes, and 3-of-4 free throws. Breden topped the assist category with five while senior forward Naomi McDaniel led on the boards at nine. All 16 Bearcats saw court time in the win.
 
Coming up, McKendree will take a two-week hiatus before hosting Harris-Stowe State University on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m.
