Four Finish in Double Figures as Duke Defeats Charlotte, 80-56

DURHAM – Paced by a career-high 21 points from Jared McCain, the Duke men’s basketball team finished with four in double-figures and defeated Charlotte, 80-56, on Saturday afternoon. McCain was joined in double-figures by Jeremy Roach, Jaylen Blakes and Mark Mitchell, who scored 18, 15 and 12, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Duke opened the game with a stop and score, capped off by a three-pointer by Jared McCain. Jeremy Roach and Mark Mitchell got in on the scoring and Duke held a three-point lead, 9-6, at the first media timeout of the contest.
  • A fast-break dunk by Jaylen Blakes pushed Duke’s lead to 14-9 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Back-to-back three-pointers by Roach and Blakes pushed the Blue Devils’ scoring run to eight straight, gave Duke its first double-digit lead of the afternoon and forced a Charlotte timeout.
  • McCain connected on two straight contested shots in the paint, giving the freshman nine early points and the Blue Devils a 16-point advantage, 31-15. McCain reached double-figures on the next possession with a three-pointer, before fast-break buckets by Caleb Foster, Mitchell and Kyle Filipowski extended Duke’s lead to 40-17 with just over four minutes remaining before halftime.
