Five Monarchs Collect Weekly USA South Honors

ROME, Ga.  The USA South Athletic Conference announced its weekly accolades on Monday, naming five Monarchs to the list of Athletes of the Week. Methodist found success across the board last week, collecting league honors in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s track and field.
 
Freshman Ron Jones was named Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week after scoring a career-high 12 points in Saturday’s 75-54 win over Warren Wilson. The guard earned his first start of the season and was also credited with one steal during the contest.
 
Earning the title of Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week, freshman Arriana White scored a career-high 14 points in just 13 minutes of playing time as the Monarchs defeated Greensboro 79-45 on Tuesday. White was 6-for-8 from the field (including 2-for-3 from deep) while also posting four rebounds.
 
Following a first-place finish in the men’s 3,000-meter run at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open on Saturday, Alex Topoly was named Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. The sophomore passed three runners on the final lap of the race to complete the victory with a time of 9:21.83. He also claimed a second-place finish in the men’s mile run, recording a time of 4:30.68.
 
Freshman Damian Jefferson earned Men’s Indoor Track Rookie of the Week honors after competing in two events at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open. He recorded a time of 25.81 in the men’s 200-meter dash while posting a time of 59.94 in the men’s 400-meter dash.
 
Securing a second-place finish in two events at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open, sophomore Brandi Gardner earned the title of Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. In her lone track event, she ran the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 27.08. She also competed in the women’s long jump, leaping 5.32 meters on her best jump.
