No. 10 Smith Cruises Past Eastern Connecticut, 91-52

WILLIMANTIC, CT – Graduate student Sofia Rosa (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) tied her career-high with 22 points as the No. 10 Smith basketball team cruised to a 91-52 win over Eastern Connecticut State Thursday evening. The Pioneers move to 5-1 on the year, while the Warrios dipped to 2-4. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Rosa was dominant in the post on 10-of-14 shooting with eight rebounds
  • Senior Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) finished with 14 points, seven assists, seven boards, two assists and one steal
  • Sophomore Selam Maher (Hopkins, MN/St. Louis Park) and junior Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) each added 11 points
  • The Pioneers shot 51.3% (40-of-78) from the floor, 33.3% (7-of-21) from three-point range and 36.4% (4-of-11) from the free-throw line
  • The Warriors went 36.2% (21-of-58) from the field, 12.5% (1-of-8) from long distance, and 64.3% (9-of-14) from the free-throw line
  • Smith controlled the glass, holding a 52-31 advantage on the boards

Game Highlights

  • Both teams struggled offensively early on before Rosa’s jumper at the 5:32 mark put Smith ahead 6-1. A pair of free throw by Shaina Lewis got Eastern Conncticut within five, 14-9, but Smith ended the first quarter with a Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) three pointer with five seconds left on the clock to go up 19-9.
  • Smith outscored the Warriors 21-6 in the second, with six different players scoring, giving the visitors a 40-15 advantage at the half.
