British Basketball League pay tribute to Ken Nottage

The British Basketball League pays tribute following the passing of Ken Nottage, British Basketball League legend and minority shareholder of the Newcastle Eagles.

One of England’s most-capped players in the early days of the British Basketball League, Sunderland and Newcastle legend Ken Nottage has passed away at age 64 after a short illness. Ken’s contributions to the sport have left an enduring impact, and his legacy will be remembered fondly by fans, friends, and colleagues alike.

Having spent the bulk of his basketball career before forming our League, Ken was instrumental in creating the Newcastle Eagles and stayed on for over four decades after being recruited to the then-Sunderland franchise in 1981.

Ken’s remarkable career on the basketball court showcased his exceptional skills and solidified his status as a trailblazer in British basketball.  His time representing England on the international stage and his contributions to the success of both Sunderland and Newcastle mark him as a pivotal figure in the sport’s history.

In addition to his directorship at the Eagles, Ken was managing director of Gloucester Rugby for 13 years, where he was the driving force behind the club’s sporting successes, seeing them top the league three times and lift three trophies, as well as commercial growth off the pitch, much like that he helped establish in Newcastle.

The League’s heartfelt sympathies are with Ken’s family, and all who loved him.
