Tristen Newton gave NBA scouts and team executives a glimpse of what UConn fans had seen all season during this weekend’s G League Elite Camp. Ultimately though, it wasn’t enough to earn him an invite to stick around for the NBA Draft Combine.
Newton was in Chicago for the elite camp, hoping to get a call-up to the combine, where he could further showcase his skills alongside fellow NBA hopefuls.
He had a rough first day, scoring just two points and committing five turnovers in his first scrimmage. But he picked things up on Day 2, putting up 14 points, grabbing six rebounds and draining three of four 3-point attempts. His performance was impressive enough that the NBA G League account tweeted about him.

Still, he wasn’t one of the eight players invited to stick around for the week. Those invites instead went to Johni Broome (Auburn), Kendric Davis (Memphis), Tosan Evbuomwan (Princeton), Jazian Gortman (Overtime Elite), PJ Hall and Hunter Tyson(Clemson), Dillon Jones (Weber State), and Sir’Jabari Rice (Texas).
Those eight joined UConn’s Andre Jackson, Adama Sanogo and Jordan Hawkins, as well as 75 other players at the combine, which began Monday.

Newton has retained his college eligibility while testing the NBA Draft waters, so he still has the option to return to UConn next season.
The 6-5 guard from El Paso, Texas averaged 10.1 points, 4.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game last season. He made his mark on Huskies history, becoming the first player at the school– men’s or women’s– to post multiple triple-doubles in the same season. He also left on a high note, scoring 19 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out four assists in UConn’s 76-59 national championship game win over San Diego State.
