Mizzou Basketball Signs Jesus Carralero

The Missouri men’s basketball team is adding a highly-skilled frontcourt player to its 2023-24 roster with the addition of Jesus Carralero (Málaga, Spain), announced on Monday.

One of the top passing forwards in the country, Carralero was one of only three players nationally 6-8 or taller to average at least 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals during the 2021-22 season, joining first-round NBA Draft selection Jake LaRavia of Wake Forest and Princeton’s Tosan Evbuomwan.

“Jesus adds much needed size to our roster and we’re excited that he is joining us at Mizzou,” said Whitten Family Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dennis Gates. “He brings an element of toughness and physicality to our team. Jesus is a competitor who has performed well versus high-major programs during his career and his IQ and play-making ability for his size make him a perfect fit for our program. We are confident that he will help us win games at Mizzou.”

A 6-foot-8 forward from Málaga, Spain, Carralero tallied 9.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game, while also adding 36 steals and 26 blocks in his last full season of action during the 2021-22 campaign. A versatile frontcourt player, Carralero finished as the only player to rank in top 10 in the Big South in rebounding (ninth), assists (fourth), steals (10th) and blocks (eighth), while also placing seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5).

Carralero appeared in just five games during the 2022-23 season – averaging 10.6 points with a field goal clip of 50.0 and a 3-point mark of 54.4 – before missing the remainder of the season with an injury. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at Mizzou, pending a medical redshirt waiver.

Overall, Carralero totaled 582 points in 78 career games (38 starts) at Campbell to go with 304 rebounds, 218 assists, 68 steals and 48 blocks.

Carralero is Mizzou’s fifth signee of the spring period as the Tigers currently own the No. 2 class in the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings. Carralero, Indiana transfer Tamar Bates, Iowa State transfer Caleb Grill, National Junior College Player of the Year Curt Lewis and Colorado State John Tonje join a program that is coming off one its most successful campaigns in years during the 2022-23 season as the Tigers finished with 25 wins in their first season under Gates – their most in 11 campaigns – while claiming…
