College basketball transfer portal rankings 2023: Kentucky's Sahvir Wheeler commits to Washington

Former Kentucky point guard Sahvir Wheeler announced Wednesday that he is headed to Washington for his final season of collegiate eligibility after beginning his career at Georgia and spending the past two seasons with the Wildcats. Wheeler ranks No. 14 in the CBS Sports Transfer Rankings after averaging 6.1 assists per game during the first four years of his career.

Adding a proven distributor was key for the Huskies following the departure of promising guard Keyon Menifield for Arkansas and the decision of secondary distributor PJ Fuller to enter the portal. Wheeler ranks No. 5 all-time in SEC history for assists with 655 and has logged 86 starts over his career. Though he dealt with injuries and then a reduced role at UK this season, Wheeler is a proven, steady distributing adept at facilitating quality looks for teammates.

Overlooked amid Wheeler’s rocky 2022-23 campaign with the Wildcats was that his 3-point shooting percentage rose to a career-best 36.6% and that he committed fewer turnovers per 40 minutes than in any prior season of his college career. For a Washington program that will be seeking just its second NCAA Tournament appearance under seventh-year coach Mike Hopkins in the 2023-24 season, Wheeler is the type of addition who could be a difference maker.

He will also reunite with former Kentucky teammate Keion Brooks who led the Huskies in scoring at 17.7 points per game this past season. Wheeler is also following in the footsteps of another former UK point guard, Quade Green, who transferred to Washington for the 2019-20 season and proceeded to average double figures in both his seasons with the program.

Well over 1,000 Division I players have entered the portal and there are still weeks of player movement ahead before 2023-24 rosters will be settled. Here at CBS Sports, we have distilled the massive number of transfers to a list of the top 40 names to know. This list will grow and player rankings will change as the May 11 deadline for players to enter the portal approaches.
