Wake Forest Brings in Fighting Irish for Second Matchup of the Season

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men’s basketball team hosts the Notre Dame Irish on Saturday night inside LJVM for the penultimate home game of the season. The Demon Deacons will take on the Irish at 7 p.m. ET live on ACC Network.

Wake Forest (17-11, 9-8) is coming off a hard-fought battle in Raleigh on Wednesday night (Feb. 22). The Deacs fell to the Wolfpack, 90-74, in PNC Arena. Wake Forest is currently eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) standings while the Irish are tied for 14th with Louisville.

Wake Forest’s 51.9 field goal percentage against NC State was the second-highest percentage the Wolfpack have allowed in conference play this season. The Deacs were the only ACC team to make more than nine threes and only team this season to make more than 10 from deep against State. NC State’s 14 trips to the free throw line were the second-fewest free throw attempts for the Wolfpack in conference play at home so far this season. Wake Forest went to the line 10 times, the second-lowest amount of attempts by an ACC school against the Wolfpack so far this season.

Tyree Appleby led Wake Forest on the scoring end, posting 19 points while adding four assists and three rebounds. Cameron Hildreth was effective in his drives to the rim, as the sophomore ultimately went 5-of-8 from the field for 13 points. He also snatched five boards. Andrew Carr chipped in 13 points of his own on a 5-for-10 field goal shooting clip. Matthew Marsh made all but of his attempts inside of the paint (4-of-5), posting a line of eight points and seven rebounds. Damari Monsanto went 3-for-4 from three-point range in the first half for nine points. Knocking in a pair of triples, Daivien Williamson added eight points.

The Irish are 10-18 on the season and 2-15 in ACC play. They’re coming off a narrow, four-point loss to North Carolina in South Bend Wednesday night (Feb. 22). Notre Dame was led by Cormac Ryan, who had a team-high 14 points and also pulled down seven rebounds. Nate Laszewski led the Irish on the rebounding end with nine boards, all on the defensive glass. Laszewski paces the team in conference play, averaging 13.4 points and 6.7 boards per league game. Ryan, Dane Goodwin and JJ Starling are also averaging double-figure scoring for the Irish in league play. Notre Dame has yet to win a conference game on the road this season.
