Lady Bulldogs Post Season Sweep Over Coppin State

ORANGEBURG, SC—Nicole Gwynn tossed in an team-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead South Carolina State to an season sweep over visit Coppin State Saturday (Feb.11th) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

South Carolina State improves to 3-20 overall, 2-6 in the MEAC, while Coppin State falls to 5-17 overall, 2-5 in the league.

The Lady Bulldogs knocked off the Eagles earlier this season on the rod in an 63-61 victory in Baltimore, MD.

Janiah Hinton added 12 points and three assists, while Aja Smith chipped in 11 points on the day. Lovely Sonnier fell two points short of another double-double, finishing the game with eight points and 12 rebounds in the win.

Coppin State was led by Mossi Staples with a game-high 19 points and Jewel Watkins with 13 in the loss.

Next up: South Carolina State returns to action on Monday (Feb.13th) when they host Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s contest in a 7:30 p.m. start.

2023 MEAC TOURNAMENT: The 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s and women’s basketball tournament is scheduled for March 8-11, 2023, at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va. The annual MEAC Basketball Tournament moved to Norfolk in 2013 after spending the previous four years in Winston-Salem, N.C. from 2009 through 2012.
