Duke Falls in Overtime at No. 8 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Duke rallied from a five-point deficit with less than two minutes to play, but had a potential trip to the free throw line with less than a second remaining waived off and fell to No. 8 Virginia in overtime, 69-62, on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils (17-8, 8-6) were led by Jeremy Roach, who scored 16 points. The junior was joined in double-figures by Tyrese Proctor (14), Jacob Grandison (11) and Dariq Whitehead (10). On the board, Duke was led by Ryan Young, who finished with 11 boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Duke’s first basket of the afternoon came courtesy of Jeremy Roach, who knocked down a three-pointer after an offensive rebound by Dereck Lively II and gave the Blue Devils an early lead, 5-4.
  • Duke held the Cavaliers scoreless for over three minutes and used a personal seven-point run by Roach to edge ahead, 12-9, just over seven minutes into the game. The Leesburg, Va., native scored 12 of the Blue Devils’ first 14 points and reached double-digit points for the fifth straight game coming out of the under-12 media timeout.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers by Tyrese Proctor extended Duke’s lead, 20-13, with 9:38 remaining in the first half. Duke made five made field goals out of its last six attempts and utilized a 15-4 run spanning five minutes to stay ahead, 20-15.
  • The two teams traded dunks to end the opening half and Duke remained in the lead, 27-25, at the break. Through the first 20 minutes, Roach led the Blue Devils…
