Buffs struggle shooting at Oregon State

The Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball team is going through a rough stretch right now.

CU dropped its contest in Corvallis on Saturday night, 60-52, against the Oregon State Beavers. With the loss, the Buffaloes are now 12-11 overall and 4-8 in Pac-12 play.

The Buffaloes were able to build a seven-point lead in the first half, but the Beavers were able to get hot from beyond the arc in the second half. With the Buffs nursing a three-point lead, Beavers junior guard Jordan Pope nailed three-straight 3-pointers to give OSU a 40-36 lead. The Buffaloes were never able to recapture the lead after that point.

Here are our takeaways from the Oregon State loss:

With Saturday’s loss, CU has now dropped five of its last six games. During this six-game span, the Buffaloes’ offense is only averaging 60.5 points per game. The defense numbers don’t look bad, as they’ve allowed 66.8 points on average during that same stretch. But if you remove the 55 allowed during their only win, that number jumps to 69.2 points per game.

Colorado fans have gotten used to poor offensive play watching football over the last couple of seasons, and shooting performances like the OSU game are provoking some flashbacks. Colorado’s shooting woes continued as the Buffs hit only 35% from the field, 29.2% from three and 42.9% from the free-throw line.

Colorado fouled way too much against the Beavers, allowing OSU to shoot 22 free throws on the night. The Beavers hit 17 of these attempts to give them a 14-point advantage from the charity stripe.

CU’s best player is playing well right now but needs some backup. Tristan da Silva had another good night, scoring 22 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. While he wasn’t his usual efficient self, da Silva still played very well in trying to pull out a win against the Beavers.

KJ Simpson had a rough two games in the state of Oregon. Since hitting the game-winning three in the waning seconds of the Washington State game last week, Simpson has only been able to convert on 3-of-26 from the field. The Buffaloes need a more efficient game from their young guard moving forward.
