Both teams in the C2C are off to outstanding starts to the 2022-23 season, winning 14 games so far this season. The Eagles are receiving votes in the top-25 rankings under the direction of five-time Conference Coach of the Year Deena Applebury, who won her 400th career game last week. This season, the Eagles feature an efficient offense that ranks in the top-25 nationally in field-goal percentage with a defense that stymies opponents to the tune of just 50.7 points per game.

Christopher Newport counters with the second-ranked scoring offense in the country, averaging over 92 points per game this season including the team’s third 100-point showing of the season in Sunday’s win at Washington and Lee. The Captains remain one of only eight teams in the nation without a loss and have improved to 57-1 over the last 58 games dating back to December 2019.

In Sunday’s victory, senior Anaya Simmons, with 29 points, and sophomore Hannah Kaloi, with 27 points, each recorded a career-high for the Captains. Simmons currently ranks third in the nation in field-goal percentage, burying 64.8 percent of her shots after leading the nation in efficiency as a junior. Graduate student Sondra Fan added 19 points, moving past Nicole Mitchell on the all-time scoring chart for 13th all-time and trailing Tia Perry for 12th on the list by seven points.

The all-time series favors the Captains, 37-21, heading into Wednesday’s matchup. CNU has won ten of the last 11 in the series, including a streak of seven straight.
