Wright nets first career double-double in loss to Widener


FREDERICK, Md. – Hood College’s Lele Wright (Wilmington, Del./Howard) had 22 points and 15 rebounds, but the Hood College women’s basketball team fell short in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action against Widener 76-66. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Wright recorded a career high in rebounds with 15, while netting a game-high 22 points for her first career double-double.  

  • Marlise Newson (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) finished with a season-high 20 points and five rebounds, shooting 7-of-14 from the field. The senior also knocked down three 3-pointers in six tries.  

  • Tiffany Manning (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) finished the afternoon with nine rebounds. 

How it Happened

  • After being down 22-13 after the first period, the Blazers opened the second on a 7-0 run that brought them within striking distance 22-20. Wright scored five of the seven points.

  • Widener responded with six straight points capped off by two Lindsay Kutz free throws, to give the Pride a 28-22 lead with 5:46 left before the half. 

  • The Blazers took their first lead of the game by way of a Manning free throw that put the score at 32-31 with just over two minutes left in the second period. 

  • A Newson 3-pointer shortly after finished a 12-5 run that gave Hood its biggest lead of the game 37-33. Hood’s halftime lead remained at four, 39-35.

  • Rachel Ludwig’s driving lay-up gave the Pride the lead in just two minutes into the third period 40-39. Wright soon after pushed the Blazers back in front when she was fouled on a made layup that was finished at the free throw line, giving Hood a 43-40 lead with 6:58 left in the third. 

  • Mia Robbins gave the Pride the lead back on another and-one opportunity that started a 9-3 run that pushed them ahead 49-45 with 3:54 left in the third period.

  • Widener ended the period on a 17-9 run that lasted over six minutes that gave the Pride a 57-51 lead heading into the fourth. 

  • Robbins hit a mid-range jumper with 1:52 left in the final period that gave the Pride its biggest lead of the game 76-64.

  • The Pride started the game on a quick 7-0 run that guided them to outsourcing the Blazers 22-13 in the first period. 

Analysis

  • The Blazers outrebounded the Pride 48-41 in the game.
