Rutgers men’s basketball got an impressive 64-50 win over Maryland on Thursday night.

It was a strong defensive effort from Rutgers as they forced 20 turnovers in the Big Ten win. Senior guard Paul Mulcahy led the scoring for the Scarlet Knights with 16 points, continuing his hot scoring streak. Rutgers guards Paul Mulcahy, Cam Spencer, and Caleb McConnell each finished the game with double-digit points.

Thursday night was the second consecutive game that Maryland failed to score more than 50 points. It was a slow and sloppy start to the game for the visitors as Maryland scored just 17 points in the first half. All told, the Rutgers defense held Maryland’s starting five to only 29 points.

It is now 15 opponents this season that Rutgers has held below their usual scoring average. Oh, and Rutgers has played 15 games this season.

Rutgers men’s basketball has benefited from transferred senior guard Cam Spencer. Spencer has transferred from Loyola University Maryland to Rutgers with two seasons of eligibility. This season, the Rutgers guard is averaging 12.9 points, 3.6 assists and a Big Ten-leading 2.6 steals per game. Spencer is averaging 96.3 percent free throw percentage and 43.8 percent three-point percentage. Also, the senior guard is averaging a career-high 50 percent field goal percentage this season.

Rutgers’ victory over Maryland marks the twelfth time this season that an opponent has been to held to at least 10 points below their season scoring average.

The Scarlet Knights forced a season-high 20 Maryland turnovers, with 11 steals and six block shots. Also, Rutgers held the Terrapins starters to 29 points, holding Maryland to only two players with double-digit points.
