Who played the most games for the Celtics in their storied history?

The folks over at our sister site HoopsHype share our predilection for all things NBA history, and they have put together all sorts of lists regarding your favorite teams you likely were not aware of.

Recently, H/H’s Frank Urbina assembled a deep dive into the player who has been with every team in the league the longest in terms of games played.

Per Urbina, they “aren’t the high-quality selections for each team, but the player who played the most games for each NBA team without ever playing for another.”

For a squad such as the Boston Celtics, you would be forgiven if that player wasn’t immediately evident given how much retention they had of elite players throughout the 1960s and 1980s in particular. For the Celtics, it was Hondo, better known to many as John Havlicek.

“A two-way force on the wing, John Havlicek played a major part in nearly half of the Boston Celtics’ 17 championships, winning eight of them, even winning Finals MVP for one of them,” writes Urbina.

“He spent his entire lengthy career rocking the infamous Boston Celtic green,” adds the H/H hoops historian — 1,270 games over 16 seasons, in fact.
