CNU Women’s Basketball Now 10-0 After 79-45 Win Over Colorado College in Puerto Rico Clasico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — For the second year in a row and the third time in the last six seasons, Christopher Newport women’s basketball has opened the season on a ten-game winning streak. After another tormenting defensive effort on Sunday night against Colorado College, the nationally-ranked Captains improved to 10-0 on the season with a 79-45 victory in the Puerto Rico Clasico tournament held in San Juan. 

Playing internationally for the first time in program history, the Captains made themselves at home in the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, picking up the teams sixth wire-to-wire victory of the season. Never trailing in the contest, CNU held the Tigers (5-5) to just 13 made baskets and 33.3 percent shooting in the game (13-39). The Captains forced 30 turnovers and scored 27 points off of Colorado College giveaways in the game. 

The Captains pulled away in the second quarter with an 8-0 scoring run near the end of the opening half. Leading the way at halftime was fifth-year senior Sondra Fan, with 14 points, helping Christopher Newport build a 16-point edge at the break, 36-20. With her first-half burst, which included a pair of three-pointers, Fan surged past Tomorrow Lofton on the all-time scoring chart and now sits 14th all-time with 1,202 career points. She finished the game with a team-high 19 points and is now just 60 points shy of her next target in the all-time scoring column: Nicole Mitchell, who closed her career with 1,262 career points.
