CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers are going to be without James Harden for a few weeks as he recovers from a tendon strain in his right foot. During that time, there will be plenty of changes to their offense, and that means Tyrese Maxey needs to get going.
He is shooting 14-for-47 in two games without Harden, and the ball movement without The Beard has been inconsistent. The Sixers need Maxey to find his balance as a scorer and a distributor.
Above all else, however, the Sixers want Maxey to remain aggressive. After a 4-for-18 shooting night in the win over the Phoenix Suns, the Sixers want him to get to the basket or at least continue to get into the paint. That allows the rest of the offense to flow and helps with the ball movement.
“That was the point,” said coach Doc Rivers. “It gets stuck regardless sometimes and that’s what we got to keep working on. I thought their zone and switching got us standing around. I didn’t think Tyrese played in the paint a lot. I showed him film today (Wednesday), some six times where he had no business not getting to the paint and he didn’t so it was one of those games.”
Philadelphia will want more of this from Maxey when it takes on the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday for a quick game away from home.
