Tech Takeaways: A look back at the Hokies' 95-57 win over Delaware State

BLACKSBURG – Taking the court inside Cassell Coliseum for the first time as the reigning ACC champions, Virginia Tech showcased the offensive efficiency that led the team to hardware last March. Tech’s scoring efforts in its 95-57 win over Delaware State were the most in a season opener since 2017 (111 against Detroit Mercy).

BASILE’S BREAKOUT

  • Grant Basile recorded the most points in a debut by a Tech men’s basketball player since Landers Nolley in 2019. Both players scored 30 points in their debuts for the Hokies.
  • Shooting 75-percent from the field, Basile had the best field-goal percentage in a debut by any player in the Mike Young era (min. 10 attempts).
  • The Wright State transfer’s six 3-point field goals made was the most by a Tech player in their debut in the ACC era. Isaiah Wilkins held the previous high with five against Gardner-Webb on Nov. 9, 2018.
  •  Basile’s 30 points were the most by any player in the ACC on Monday night.

HOT FROM DEEP

  • Last season, the Hokies led the ACC in 3-point field goal percentage (39.2%). On Monday night, Tech continued hitting from beyond the arc – shooting 14-28 (50%) from deep.
  • Sean Pedulla nearly matched Basile’s numbers from beyond the arc, shooting 5-8. The last time Virginia Tech had two players make five or more 3-point attempts was against Florida State on Jan. 29.
  • The men’s basketball team wasn’t the only crew hitting from deep in Cassell on Monday, as the women’s basketball team also shot 14-28 from deep in their season-opening win.
