Verhulst Invited to USA Basketball 3x3 U23 Women’s National Team Trials

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville sophomore guard Payton Verhulst was one of 11 athletes selected to participate in the 2022 USA Basketball 3×3 Women’s U23 National Team trials. The trials will be held in Miami from August 5-8 and the women’s roster will be selected before training camp begins on August 9.

Verhulst is entering her second season with the Cardinals and is coming off an impressive freshman campaign. She was selected to the ACC All-Freshman team after ranking in the top-10 in points and assists among ACC freshmen. Verhulst helped the Cardinals take down Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen after shooting 3-3 from the field, including 1-1 from deep, and added one steal in the win over the Lady Vols.

Verhulst already has two gold medals in her time with Team USA. She helped the U19 World Cup Team win gold at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary last year. While in high school, she won gold at the 2019 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Puerto Aysen, Chile. She was named Championship MVP after starting all six games and averaged 14.5 points and 2.8 rebounds.

Following training camp, six athletes will be selected to the team. The team will be slated to compete in the fifth edition of the FIBA 3×3 Nations League, starting play within the Americas conference in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from Aug. 13-19.
