2022 Gavitt Games matchups set for Big East and Big Ten

Penn State men’s basketball has another non-conference opponent reportedly set for the 2022-23 college basketball season. According to college football insider Jon Rothstein, Penn State’s matchup in the 2022 Gavitt Games will pit head coach Micah Shrewsberry against one of his former schools.

Penn State will reportedly host Butler in the 2022 Gavitt Games, according to Rothstein on College Hoops Today. No date has been confirmed at this time.

Penn State is 1-2 all-time in games against Butler, but the two programs have not faced each other on the basketball court since 1992, during Penn State’s season as an independent in its transition from playing in the Atlantic-10 and the Big Ten. Penn State won the most recent meeting in the series with a 67-64 victory over Butler on February 12, 1992. Butler won a game earlier in the season on January 21, 1992 with a 79-75 decision on the road. Butler won the only other meeting in the series in 1975.

Shrewsberry was an assistant coach at Butler from 2008 through 2011 under former Butler head coach Brad Stevens. Butler is coming off back-to-back losing seasons after going 14-19 last season.

The Gavitt Tipoff Games is an annual eight-game series between schools from the Big Ten and Big East. The series is named after Dave Gavitt, a former athletic director at Providence and the Big East’s original commissioner.

Penn State is 2-1 in games played as part of the Gavitt Games. Penn State won its 2015 matchup against DePaul but lost to DePaul in overtime in 2018. Penn State scored a blowout win at Georgetown in 2019. Penn State did not participate in the 2021 Gavitt Games. The Big East won last year’s challenge, 6-2.

Here are the matchups for this year’s Gavitt Games as reported by Rothstein;

Villanova at Michigan State
Indiana at Xavier
Iowa at Seton Hall
Marquette at Purdue
Butler at Penn State
Northwestern at Georgetown
Nebraska at St. John’s
DePaul at Minnesota
