Tracking top 25 transfers for 2022: Arizona lands Texas guard Courtney Ramey from the portal

Tracking top 25 transfers for 2022: Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi State pursuing best player still in portal

Arizona scored a major transfer pickup on Friday, when former Texas guard Courtney Ramey announced his commitment to the Wildcats after a four-year run with the Longhorns. Ramey averaged 10.0 points per game on 36.5% 3-point shooting over 128 appearances, including 106 starts, during his time under Shaka Smart and Chris Beard at Texas.

The 6-foot-3 combo guard should slot in to a key offensive role alongside returning producers Azuolas Tubelis, Kerr Kriisa and Pelle Larsson for the Wildcats. Arizona is losing leading scorer Bennedict Mathurin and other back court weapons Dalen Terry and Justin Kier from a 33-4 team that earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Ramey should team up with Kriisa and Larsson to again give the Wildcats one of the Pac-12’s top back courts. Arizona is also welcoming Campbell transfer Cedric Henderson Jr., a 6-6 wing who averaged 13.7 points over three seasons with the Camels.

With Ramey off the board, the only remaining uncommitted player in the CBS Sports ranking of this season’s 25 transfers is No. 20 Pete Nance. A 6-10 forward, Nance averaged 14.6 points per game on 45.2% 3-point shooting in his fourth season with Northwestern last year.

With more than 1,700 Division I players entering the portal this offseason, the top 25 players listed here are merely the cream of the crop who figure to have the biggest impact on the sport next season. Hundreds more who missed the list also figure to have a major impact on college basketball next season as the sport grows collectively more accustomed to an annual wave of player movement. Here is a look at this year’s top transfers in college basketball.

The 5-foot-11 guard played a key role in helping SMU to three straight winning seasons and is the reigning AAC Player of the Year. In 2021-22, he finished second in the AAC in scoring behind a 37.2% 3-point mark on 6.5 attempts per game. Davis is more than just an outside shooter, though, and has the profile of a starting point guard for a big-time program. During the 2020-21 season, he ranked fourth nationally with 7.6 assists per game while still scoring 19 points per contest. He is also skilled at scoring inside the arc as a career 49.8% shooter on 2-point attempts. He’ll be an instant impact player for the Tigers, who are more than familiar with his capabilities.
