Warriors’ Mike Brown to interview for Kings head coach opening

Teams with head coaching vacancies are beginning to look at Steve Kerr’s bench for candidates after Golden State charged into the postseason with the third-best record in the association.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown will interview for the Sacramento Kings opening. Brooklyn’s Steve Clifford, Milwaukee’s Darvin Ham, Charles Lee and Boston’s Will Hardy are among the assistants also expected to interview for the position in Sacramento.

Brown has a proven track record in the lead chair on the sideline. Before joining Kerr’s staff in the Bay Area, Brown served as a head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers. In eight seasons as a head coach, Brown posted a 347-216 (.616%) record as a head coach. In 2009, Brown earned the NBA’s Coach of the Year award after finishing 66-16 with LeBron James and the Cavaliers.

In 2017, Brown stepped in for Kerr while the Warriors head coach dealt with a back injury. Brown helped the Warriors deep into the postseason before Kerr returned to the bench.

As head coach, Brown has helped lead Nigeria’s men’s basketball team in international play.

Since joining the Warriors staff, Brown has interviewed for head coaching openings with the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.

In the past, the Kings haven’t shied away from hiring Golden State’s assistants. In 2019, the Kings hired former Kerr assistant Luke Walton. After Walton was let go, former Warriors assistant Alvin Gentry took over as interim head coach. Mike Malone and Keith Smart are also former members of the Warriors coaching staff to go from Golden State to Sacramento.

While vacant coaching searches heat up around the league, Brown and the Warriors will be pushing to advance past the first round of the playoffs. Golden State holds a 3-0 lead over the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the Western Conference postseason.
