The Other Top 25 reflected the results of two of the biggest games of the week as Saint Mary’s reclaimed the top spot, and New Mexico jumped to No. 2.
SMC defeated Gonzaga 62-58 in Moraga Saturday night. The Gaels are now 10-0 in WCC and have a three-game lead in the conference. They held the Zags’ potent offense to a season-low 58 points.
At 18-3, Saint Mary’s ranks 22nd in Bart Torvik and the NET and 24th in KenPom. It ranks in the top 35 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. During the Gaels’ 10-game win streak, they rank ninth nationally in Torvik. Randy Bennett’s squad is 3-1 in Quad I and 7-3 in the first two quadrants.
UNM won at Utah St. 82-63 Saturday to move into sole possession of first place in the Mountain West. It was the second instance in conference history where two teams 9-1 or better squared off. The Lobos outscored the Aggies by 25 in the second half and were plus-15 on the boards.
Richard Pitino’s team is 36th in Torvik, 42nd in KenPom and 46th in the NET. It ranks seventh nationally in adjusted tempo and top 30 in defensive efficiency. At 18-4, New Mexico is now 8-2 in the first two quadrants.
Memphis, last week’s No. 1, dropped to third. Utah St. came in at No. 4, and San Diego St. rounded out the top five to give the Mountain West three of the top five. Boise St. moved into the top 10 from No. 15.
Three teams joined the ranking this week: Akron (No. 19), Grand Canyon (No. 22) and St. Bonaventure (T-24). They replaced Liberty, Samford and Yale.
