PITTSBURGH – Pitt suffered its worst first half performance of the season and could not recover from a 17-0 Virginia run in the opening 10 minutes of play as the Panthers fell at home, 73-57, Monday evening. Ishmael Leggett went 7-of-11 from the field and finished with 17 points and six rebounds as Pitt slipped to 14-8 overall and 5-6 in the ACC.
Dai Dai Ames erupted for a season-high 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field and Blake Buchanan added a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) as Virginia improved to 11-12 and 4-8 in the ACC. The Cavaliers went 10-of-22 (.455) from three-point range and consistently hit from deep to stymie every Pitt run in the second half.
Ames went 7-of-9 from the field with a pair of threes to score 16 points in the opening half as Virginia grabbed a 34-19 lead at the break. Pitt was just 6-of-20 (.300) from the field, including 1-of-7 (.143) from three-point range, in scoring a season-low 19 points in the opening 20 minutes of action.
Jorge Diaz Graham gave the Panthers a spark off the bench with nine points, four rebounds, one steal, and a blocked shot. He was 3-of-6 from long range as Pitt finished just 6-of-20 (.300) from beyond the arc in the game.
