- The Spartans fell behind early in the first half and rallied to pull within three points, 35-32, at the break but the Trojans quickly pushed the lead back to eight points, 40-32, in the opening minutes and extended it to 10 points, 55-45, on a jumper from Wesley Yates III with 13:24 left.
- Both teams went scoreless for more than two minutes before MSU used a 7-0 run to pull within 55-52 on a 3-pointer from Akins with 8:37 left in the game.
- The Trojans responded with a 10-4 run and extended their lead to 65-56 on a jumper from Desmond Claude with 3:50 left.
- The Spartans pulled to within five points, 66-61, after 1-of-2 free throws from Fears with 1:36 to play and had the ball back with just over a minute left but turned the ball over and a dunk from Yates pushed the lead to seven points, 68-61, with 37 seconds left.
- MSU trailed by as many as 15 points (22-7) in the first half but used a 9-0 run and pulled to within six points, 22-16, on a driving layup from Carr at the 10:18 mark.
- A tip-in dunk from Carr with 5:56 to play pulled the Spartans to within three points, 24-21, and a three-point play from senior center Szymon Zapala got MSU to within two points, 33-31, with 2:08 before the break.
- The Spartans struggled out of the gate, with turnovers on their first two possessions and hitting only one of the first five shots from the field as the Trojans opened an early 11-4 lead.
