Methodist Fends Off Salem for Road Win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  Methodist University women’s basketball was on road Saturday afternoon for a USA South Athletic Conference contest against Salem College. It was a tight game from start to finish, but when the last buzzer sounded, the Monarchs found themselves on the winning end of a 48-42 final.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • During the first three minutes of game action, Methodist jumped out to a 6-0 lead but then the Spirits scored a quick four points, in 20 seconds, to get back within two. After Kiley Hicks recorded two layups to push the Monarchs advantage back to six, Salem registered the next five points to make the score a one-point difference, 10-9. The last minute and a half of the opening quarter saw Methodist’s Aneesa Irizarry and Melissa D’Oleo each score a couple of points, which gave the Monarchs a four-point lead, 14-10, heading into the second period.
  • The start of the second was all Spirits as they rattled off five straight points to take their first lead of the day, 15-14. A layup by Eva McRae gave Methodist its first points of the quarter, and the advantage back to the Monarchs, until Salem rattled off another five consecutive points to go up 20-16. With her team down, Irizarry took over the game for Methodist, as she went on her own 6-0 run to put the Monarchs up by two, 22-20. A late Spirit free throw cut the deficit in…
