Women’s Basketball Narrowly Eclipsed by No. 5 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Missouri women’s basketball could not overtake No. 5 Texas, falling 70-61 Thursday night at Moody Center.

Senior forward Laniah Randle led Missouri (12-11, 1-7 SEC) with a season-high 22 points, added four steals and three rebounds.

Sophomore guard Grace Slaughter tallied 16 points, three rebounds, and one assist.

Junior guard Ashton Judd contributed 13 points and grabbed four boards.

The teams exchanged early baskets as the Tigers took a two-point lead after the opening four minutes. From there, Missouri embarked on a 10-4 run spearheaded by Slaughter who scored seven in the charge.

Randle finished with seven in the frame as Missouri led 20-13 after one.

Holding a five-point advantage two minutes into the second quarter, a layup by Judd sparked another 10-4 run that pushed the Tigers’ advantage to 11. Randle capped the scoring streak at the line to convert a 3-point play.

Texas was able to respond with an offensive spurt of its own, but a 3-pointer in the final minute by sophomore guard Abbey Shreacke gave Mizzou a 35-33 lead at the half.

The Longhorns took their first lead of the contest with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter. The advantage was extended to seven, but a triple from Slaughter and a jumper from Judd brought the Tigers back to within two with a couple of minutes remaining in the period.

Texas inched its lead to 52-45 as the quarter closed.
