The top four teams in Big Ten women’s basketball before the season began are the top four teams in the Big Ten standings entering Wednesday, January 22. USC women’s basketball and UCLA women’s basketball lead the conference with unbeaten records (USC being 7-0, UCLA 6-0). Ohio State and Maryland are tied for third place at 6-1. No other teams have fewer than two conference losses in the Big Ten.
Guess which teams play each other on Thursday evening? Maryland and Ohio State. The Terrapins go to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes.
You can do the math here: One of Maryland or Ohio State will lose a second conference game. As long as USC beats Purdue on Wednesday night — and it should — the Trojans will have a two-game lead over Maryland or OSU by this weekend.
Then guess what happens: Maryland hosts UCLA this coming Sunday, January 26. USC will gain a game on one of those two teams. The Trojans, following their Jan. 22 game at Purdue, don’t play again until Jan. 30 against Minnesota.
USC’s main contenders for the Big Ten women’s basketball championship are going to beat each other up in the coming weeks. Will UCLA remain unbeaten? Will Maryland fall off the pace? Will Ohio State buckle? At least one of those three competitors will lose at least once in the next five days. It could be two. Either UCLA and USC will cement themselves as the top teams in the Big Ten with Ohio State in third place, or Maryland will make a big push for second place with USC remaining in first.
Buckle up. The Big Ten women’s basketball race is beginning to give us the heavyweight matchups which will reshape the top of the conference.
