NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Taking on their cross-water rivals for the first time since December 15, 2019, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women’s basketball team is back in action on Wednesday night as they host Virginia Wesleyan University at 6:00 p.m. The Captains, ranked No. 6 in the WBCA Coaches’ Poll, will put their 17-1 record on the line against the Marlins who carry an overall mark of 5-9 so far this season. 

Christopher Newport is looking to remain unbeaten at home this season with an 8-0 mark so far at the Freeman Center. Heading into the contest, head coach Bill Broderick carries an impressive 134-12 record at home as part of his 299-46 career record as the leader of the Captains since 2012-13. 

For fans unable to attend in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available online at CNUsports.com. Tickets for the contest are $10 for chairback seating and $5 for general admission seating. CNU students are admitted free with a valid ID. 

This week, the Captains held their position at No. 6 in the WBCA Coaches’ Poll while sliding back to No. 10 in the D3hoops.com Top 25. CNU has remained in the top-25 polls for 48 consecutive weeks and have earned a spot in the top 25 at least once in 15 straight seasons. CNU has strung together ten straight victories heading into Wednesday evening’s matchup against the Marlins. 

CNU has won 10 in a row against the Marlins and lead the all-time series, 46-21. Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan first met in 1971 and have one of the longest histories in women’s basketball lore at CNU. Broderick is 6-0 all-time against the Marlins and first-year head coach Megan Green will be facing the Captains for the first time from the sidelines, but faced CNU as a player at Mary Washington throughout her career. 

Rookie Sarah Pritz was named the C2C Player of the Week after Christopher Newport captured a 92-57 win over Salisbury in their lone game last week. Pritz finished with 13 points and eight rebounds against the Sea Gulls while Elizabeth Creed added 12 points and seven boards. Rounding out a trio of double-digit scorers was freshman Katerina Dakos with 10 points in the game.
