Dawn Staley surpasses Kim Mulkey as highest paid coach in the sport

LSU’s Angel Reese congratulates South Carolina on national title

Women’s college basketball has a new highest-paid coach.

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley put pen to paper on an extension through 2030 worth approximately $25 million, making her the highest-paid female coach in the world, regardless of sport.

Staley’s contract puts her ahead of LSU head coach Kim Mulkey, who currently makes $3.264 million with a maximum bonus of $750,000. UConn’s Geno Auriemma is third with $3.1 million per year.

The contract, which went into effect immediately following approval from South Carolina’s Board of Trustees, starts at four million per year and increases by $250,000 each year. Staley is set to make $5.25 million through the 2029-30 season with opportunities for bonuses based on postseason results.

Coming off a national championship, the veteran head coach was due for an extension. Since 2021, the Gamecocks have lost just three regular-season games. Staley, who took the reins in 2008, led her team to eight regular season SEC titles since 2013-14 and finished no lower than second over that time.

LSU and South Carolina will meet for the first time this year next week. The series has been dominated by the Gamecocks.
