Texas A&M great Acie Law hit “The Shot” 18 years ago to beat Texas

The Texas A&M vs Texas rivalry has been around for a century and after a decade-plus hiatus, it’s been renewed with the Lone Star Showdown taking center stage across all sports.

On Saturday, basketball gets their turn to fight for the right to claim the first victory in SEC play setting the tone for the series going forward. All the old records can be thrown out of the window on game day as the only thing that matters is who is the better team that day. But we would be kidding ourselves if we didn’t at least reminisce about the best moments of yesteryear.

There are several big moments in Aggie basketball history with one of the more recent being in 2016 when down by 12 they rallied with 44 seconds to eventually win in double overtime over Northern Iowa for a Sweet 15 yo berth. However, when comes to this rivalry one of the biggest shots took place ten years earlier at Reed Arena by Texas A&M Hall of Famer Acie Law IV.

With just seconds left on the clock and an NCAA tournament bid on the line for the Aggies and the Big 12 title in the grasp of the Longhorns. Law took the inbound pass from the sideline and after a few dribbles he pulled up from the three-point line an knocked down the shot for a 46-43 over the No. 7 Longhorns.

Watch the big shot below:

Reed Arena erupted for one of the greatest moments in Texas A&M Athletics history. Here is what Law had to say after the game:

“On the last shot I just had great confidence in myself and my teammates had great confidence in me as well. Coach told me before the game that if was going to be my game. They had great defense on the last shot. Words can’t describe the feeling of beating a top 10 rivalry team with a lot on the line. For them it was the Big 12 championship and for us it was the NCAA tournament. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen Coach Gillispie speechless.”

We hope to witness more memorable moments like this in the many years to come and Saturday an old rivalry gets new life on Gary Blair Court.
