The Other Top 25: Memphis moves back to No. 1 in tight finish at top of poll

After a one-week absence from the top spot, Memphis returned to No. 1 in this week’s Other Top 25. Dayton followed the Tigers by just a single point and claimed the most nods for the top spot with three. Utah also received a first-place vote and came in third this week. Saint Mary’s, who was No. 1 last week, dropped to fifth. San Diego State rounded out the top five.

Penny Hardaway’s Tigers won their lone game this week. They knocked off No. 16 Clemson 87-82 in overtime on the road Saturday. That marked the second-highest ranked road win for the program in Hardaway’s seven seasons. Tyrese Hunter notched a game-high 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting from deep. Colby Rogers followed with 22.

Memphis ranks 34th in KenPom, 40th in BartTorvik and 30th in the NET rankings. It has a 5-1 mark in Quad 1 and boasts an 8-2 overall record. The team sits 23rd in Torvik’s offensive efficiency and second nationally in 3-point field goal percentage at 44.3%.

The Flyers also boasted a ranked win in their only game this past week. They defeated No. 6 Marquette 71-63 Saturday night. This season is now the second time in program history that they have beaten two teams ranked in the top six nationally in one season. (The other team was the 1967 group, who went to the Final Four.) UD trailed by 10 at halftime and outscored the Golden Eagles 45-27 in the second half. Four players tallied double figures, led by 15 apiece from Javon Bennett and Zed Key.

The Aggies are one of five undefeated teams in the country and one of just two mid-majors with an unblemished record (along with Drake). They moved to 10-0 on the season with an 88-67 win over South Florida Saturday. This start to the campaign is the best in program history. Mason Falslev narrowly missed a triple-double with 27 points, nine rebounds, a career-high nine assists and three steals.

Jerrod Calhoun’s club sits 46th in KenPom, 52nd in BartTorvik and 20th in the NET. It does not have a Quad-1 win and just two victories in Quad 2.
