Stellar Defensive Effort Leads WBB to 64-57 Win Over Maryland Eastern Shore

WASHINGTON – Tyi Skinner and Jyah LoVett each scored a team-high 13 points, Jalyn Brown had 12 and Kennedy Fauntleroy added 11 in the Sun Devil women’s basketball team’s 64-57 win over Maryland Eastern Shore in the fourth annual Coaches vs. Racism Roundball Classic.

ASU was phenomenal on the defensive end where it allowed the fewest points in a game this season and had season bests in steals (15) and blocked shots (9) and forced 32 turnovers, 13 more than the previous opponent high of 19 by Oregon State in last month’s Briann January Classic.

Jazion Jackson, who just missed a double-digit effort in scoring (9 points), tied her career highs in steals (6) and blocks (2) and led ASU with six rebounds. Kennedy Basham (6 points, 5 rebounds) had a game-high five blocks, one short of tying her career high.

In addition to her scoring contributions, Fauntleroy had a team-high seven assists – nearly half of ASU’s 15 assists – and four steals.

The Sun Devils (5-4) dominated the second and third quarters, outscoring the Hawks (4-6) 41-23 to break open what was a tie game (12-12) after one quarter. During the 20-minute stretch, the Hawks made only 35 percent (8-23) of their field goal attempts while also committing 17 turnovers that ASU turned into 17 points.

Lovett’s 3-pointer with 1:52 remaining in the first quarter, started a 12-0 run for ASU that concluded with Brown’s two free throws to give the Sun Devils a 21-12 advantage three-plus minutes into the second quarter.

LoVett (7 points) and Fauntleroy (8 points) combined for 15 of ASU’s 23 points in the second quarter. ASU also scored eight points from the line to help it take a 35-26 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, ASU connected on 50 percent (8-16) of its shots. Skinner, one of six players who scored in the quarter, led ASU with seven points.

Because of the 18-point lead it had built up, ASU was able to prevent the Hawks from posing any serious threat at a comeback despite outscoring ASU 22-11 in the final quarter.

Saturday’s game was the fourth in a seven-game stretch in which ASU is on the road for either a neutral site contest or as the away team in a true road game. ASU’s game at Coppin State on Thursday was its first true ‘away’ game of the season. Saturday’s contest – played at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington D.C., home of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics – was the last of the three neutral…
