Nebraska basketball coach Fred Hoiberg talks following win over UNF

Nebraska basketball coach Fred Hoiberg met with the media following his team’s 103-72 victory over North Florida. The 103 points are the most the Huskers have scored since putting up 110 points against Doane on Dec. 17, 2021.

Connor Essegian led the Huskers with a game-high 22 points, including 6-of-8 from three. It was his second straight 20-point game and the fourth of his career.

Brice Williams contributed 17 points and a season-high six assists in the win. Sam Hoiberg led the defensive effort for the Cornhuskers with a career-high four steals.

Nebraska is 1-0 all-time against North Florida and 8-0 all-time against teams from the Atlantic Sun Conference. They have now won 17 straight home games dating back to last season.

“The thing I was most happy with today was the start. You talk in these early games about how important it is to go out there and throw the first punch and I thought we did that. I think it was 18-4 to start the game and the thing is, they switch one through five, and that’s the first time we’ve seen a defense like that. The thing you cannot do is get stagnant and just try to force it in against a mismatch. We took advantage of some mismatches but once the ball shifted the defense side to side, I thought our activity was good. I thought we got our hands on some balls which got us out and in transition. I thought we did a really nice job finding Connor (Essegian). He obviously had it going again for the second straight game and guys did a good job of finding him. Overall, I think the movement was the thing that I was most pleased with. 22 assists, six turnovers – we are continuing to make strides in the right direction with that and we’re going to need it obviously once we start playing Big Ten games next Saturday.”
